Delegate Washington Wins Primary Election
Three Democratic incumbents will face a Republican newcomer in the District 22 delegates’ race in November.
Delegates Tawanna Gaines, Anne Healey and Alonzo Washington were victorious in the first step of their re-election bids Tuesday, beating out challenger Rushern Baker IV, who received 16 percent of the vote, according to preliminary results from the Prince George’s County Board of Elections.
District 22 includes the municipalities of Greenbelt, Berwyn Heights, Hyattsville, New Carrollton, North Brentwood, Riverdale and University Park.
In the Senate race, incumbent State Sen. Paul Pinsky of Hyattsville and and Republican challenger Janice Denise Fountaine of Riverdale ran unopposed.
Of the four candidates for delegate, Washington received the most votes with 31.7 percent and Gaines followed with 26.5 percent.
“I’m very proud of our team,” Gaines said. “We look forward to helping the state of Maryland. We’re going to work really hard on the coordinated democratic campaign to make sure Maryland continues to move forward.”
The three incumbents beat out newcomer Baker IV, whose father –– Rushern Baker III –– ran unopposed for Prince George’s County Executive in the Democratic primary. The trio look to remain intact in the general election where they will face Republican challenger Lynn White, who ran unopposed.
Healey said she is confident that the three incumbents will move forward.
“Everyone worked very hard and the voters made their decision. It was a hard-fought, but satisfying victory,” she said. “In the Prince George’s County elections, the primary is pretty significant. I’m pretty confident the whole team will continue [on].”
Healey said education and infrastructure improvements to county school buildings would be important issues during her next term.
“We have some schools that really need some significant help,” she said.
